Lampshade Redo

I picked up a great mid-century style lamp from Hotel Liquidators for my husband's office, but the shade was crushed and needed to be replaced. Here is how I did it!

I love the shape of the fixture and the scale is big enough not to get lost on the desk.  And - bonus! - since it is from a hotel there is a plug on the base so you can charge your phone.  :-)



I used a grass cloth to remake the shade. The paper is stiff so it works really well for this application. I used the existing shade as a pattern and traced the outline by rolling the existing shade along the grass cloth.

Then I cut the metal forms off the old shade.

Using Fabri-Tac I glued the new shade together.

I think it turned out pretty well!

Also great for an entry.  Love the all-over rose motif in white so it is not overly girly.

So dark and gothic!  It could go gaudy but it could also be fabulous if used in a clean, restrained setting.

Bathroom Redo

We live in a rental so I'm confined to making only cosmetic changes, however that doesn't stop me from dreaming of the changes I would make.  The place only has one bathroom and it is small!  I've been thinking about what I would change if it was mine here here are my ideas...


This is what the bathroom looks like now (no judging!)

 It is (of course) yellow like every room in the apartment.  I painted the wide horizontal stripes to change it up a bit.


And here is the basic plan:

Basically the bathroom is a small hallway with a tub in it.  Really functional. 


Do you see that closet?  It belongs to a guest bedroom.  My idea is to steal that closet space incorporate it into the bathroom.  The guest room is large (larger than the master even) and it could stand to lose that closet.


Here is what I'm thinking the plan should be:

As you can see the major change is giving the toilet its own separate space in the former closet. The bathroom door is changed to a sliding pocket door to save space and another pocket door is used for the toilet room.


Here is my idea board:

I've always wanted to do a bathroom in carrara marble. My idea here is to do carrara marble on the floor in a large rectangular tile and in the shower for the floor with a white Moroccan-style tile for the walls.  I would panel the walls in a white-washed horizontal wide-plank oak to give the room a beachy feel.  I'd add in darker woods with the open shelving and rubbed brass accents through the lighting and fixtures.  Those wall-mounted sea urchin-like poofs are from Jayson.

The Look for Less - Shopping the Kids Section

I've found that shopping the "kids" sections of big name retailers can often be quite rewarding and economical.  Some of the cutest stuff out there is reserved for the tweens....damn them.

Are you sensing a color theme here....love that orange.  I'd use this picnic blanket on a guest room bed.  I like this little touch of purple in the pattern and trim.

Vermont Getaway

This past weekend my hubby and I went up to Vermont for a quick getaway!  We stayed at the lovely Woodstock Inn (thank you jetsetter) and had a desperately needed break from work.  Woodstock is a such a cute little town with some really gorgeous homes. Here are some of my pictures:

The beautiful bar at the Red Rooster Restaurant in the hotel. I loved how they used the light wood on the walls with the modern sconces and traditional furniture. Oh and the food was really good too :-)

Trying my hand at painting...

Last weekend I was helping my mom pull together one of the guest rooms at their house. It has been a work in progress, but I have to say it is really coming together. At first the space felt a bit disjointed. We loved the wall color (a warm melon) and the new bedspread (a punchy multi-color paisley) but it was missing something. Recently my mom added a beautiful dresser that she picked up for a song and refinished in a bright cheery red and some great side tables in a green finish and everything started to gel. She wanted some fun artwork to pull all the colors together so she asked me to do some paintings for the space.

Here is the first one:

I got my inspiration from a painting I saw in House Beautiful. The other one i did was inspired by Amanda Nisbet's Positano fabric:
